The Allotment

June certainly was a mixed bag of weather.

The allotment is looking good, and all the vegetables are doing well. New potatoes have been eaten, and beetroot and courgettes are on the way, and the garlic and onions are drying. We had to do some extra weeding on the raised bed where the beans, spinach and French beans are, but they are all coming on well, and we look forward to eating them. The sweet peas are a long way behind, as something nibbled them to the ground, we're not sure they will recover.

It was drizzling a bit when one of our volunteers Nick came to visit in his vintage car; a Vanguard, a few residents braved the drizzle to have a look. Nick's dog Laddie visited most of the residents again.

Another volunteer: Claire brought in a hedgehog which some residents held, and she showed us a picture of a young one she will be looking after shortly. Steve Holford came and sung for us. Chris played his organ one morning with a good variety of tunes, and Hazel came in to play the harp. It wasn't quite warm enough on that day to sit outside this time, but everyone enjoyed it.

Jan held a lovely church service, and we had a music quiz from the 50s and 60s. Andy also came in with a musician friend Simon who has come before, and we held that outside in the shade of the garden. Andy performed a good mix of tunes to join in with, and Simon sung us some uplifting songs that everyone enjoyed.

In art and craft this month, another volunteer Jenny came in and showed us the art of flower smashing! It was quite a noisy art and craft session, making flower bunting by sandwiching flowers between two pieces of fabric and hammering the colour out. It looked brutal but the effects were brilliant. We also had a watercolour painting session with Will helping, residents did their own delicate version, and we had a summery picture to put on the walls. Will is s student who has been doing some volunteering and will be back to see us over the summer and hopefully performing a little concert on the organ as he has done before.

We had a trip out and about in the car and paid a visit to the Spaxton village shop as one resident wanted to do a little shopping. We carried up onto the hills and had ta picnic of tea and cake and enjoyed the view before heading back to The Old Vicarage. A couple of residents attended the Otterhampton and Combwich garden club who were holding a social this time with Bingo, and one of the residents scooped the main prize!
