Gardening Activities

What a fantastic summer we have had with lots of days spent out in the garden, just sitting and enjoying company, playing some games or gardening.

Residents have enjoyed tending the vegetables for the garden and we have appreciated eating the beetroot and tomatoes. The runner beans the residents sowed in the spring and then planted in the allotment have been highly successful and we have had a continuous stream coming through the kitchen.

Sweet peas were also sown, and we have enjoyed these on the tables in the dining room throughout the summer, the scent has been lovely.

The residents are looking forward to the Combwich Flower show in September, we have some exhibits organised and did some colouring this month for another entry. We will work on some more the week before the show and hope it all comes together with the vegetable and garden entries a few days before the show.

Another garden project that has been a great success is our trough with herbs, and edible flowers. As they grow, they will be used much more extensively in the kitchen and cooking. Mints, thymes, parsley, lemon scented herbs, tarragon, and sage, mixed with different violas makes an extremely attractive and useful bed.

We have had a few disappointments with entertainment this month, the owls were expected to visit again, but they cancelled due to injury and possibilities of bird flu, and our country and western singer also cancelled due to illness. So, our entertainment came from our volunteers and social activities manager.

Thank you again to all our volunteers. Chris came in and played the organ. Suzanne came and played scrabble with residents. Jan came and did a lovely church service. Andy came with a lady singer called Micky and sung a lovely selection of tunes accompanied by the guitar, and squeeze box, a lot of songs which we knew and could join in with. We still had a good variety of games, although with the hot weather sometimes it was difficult to get quite so motivated.

One afternoon when it was not so hot we had a lovely drive over the hills eventually to blue anchor, and had an ice cream on the sea front, and watched the people and dogs walk by. Hopefully, we will have a few more drives out in the coming months.

The village had a car boot, craft fair and tea and cakes sale which some residents managed to get over to and enjoyed talking to folk in the village.

Our usual exercise sessions, quizzes, reading sessions and others activities were enjoyed.
